Why Your POS Printer Choice Matters
The receipt printer is one of the most heavily-used components in any retail POS setup — it runs every time a customer checks out. A slow printer creates queues. A printer with a narrow paper path wastes rolls. A poorly-built one needs replacement within a year.
Choosing the right printer upfront saves you money on paper, reduces downtime, and keeps checkout moving fast. Here's what matters:
- Print speed (mm/sec): At a busy counter, even 20mm/sec difference adds up. 200mm/sec is the minimum for anything beyond very light use.
- Paper width: Must match your POS terminal's paper path. The standard in India is 79mm (3-inch rolls), but some models support 82.5mm for wider receipts.
- Auto-cutter life (millions of cuts): The cutter is the first thing to wear out. A 1.5M-cut-rated cutter will last years longer than a 0.5M one at the same volume.
- Printer head life (km): Measures how many kilometers of paper the thermal head can print before replacement — direct indicator of long-term cost.
- Interfaces: USB is universal. Serial (RS-232) is needed for older POS terminals. Ethernet is essential if your printer is shared across a network.
Essae PR-55 — Compact Entry-Level
- Print speed: 200 mm/sec
- Paper width: 79.5mm
- Interfaces: USB + Ethernet (no Serial)
- Auto-cutter: Partial cut, 1 million cut life
- Paper sensor: Yes
Best for: Budget-conscious setups or low-volume billing (cafes, small service counters). If you're printing under 200 bills/day and don't need Serial connectivity, the PR-55 is the most affordable option.
Limitation: No Serial port limits compatibility with older POS terminals. The 1M cutter life is the shortest in the lineup.
Essae PR-65 — The Reliable Workhorse
- Print speed: 220 mm/sec
- Paper width: 79mm
- Interfaces: USB + Serial + Ethernet (all three)
- Auto-cutter: Full + Partial cut, 1.5 million cut life
- RJ-11 cash drawer port: Yes
Best for: Most retail shops — the PR-65 is our most commonly recommended model. It supports all three connectivity options (covering old and new terminals), has a longer cutter life than the PR-55, and includes a cash drawer port. Value for money is excellent.
Compatibility note: The PR-65 is bundled with several Essae POS terminals including the 816J and 615.
Essae PR-75 — Premium Wide-Format
- Print speed: 220 mm/sec
- Paper width: 82.5mm (widest in the range)
- Interfaces: USB + Serial + Ethernet
- Auto-cutter: Full + Partial cut, 1.8 million cut life
- Printer head life: 160 km
- Paper-low sensor: Yes (alerts before roll runs out)
Best for: High-volume retail, hypermarkets, or any shop that prints itemized receipts with many line items (hardware stores, electronics shops). The 82.5mm paper gives more room for product names and GST breakdowns. The paper-low sensor is a practical feature at busy counters — your cashier gets an alert before the roll actually runs out.
Note: Requires 82.5mm paper rolls — confirm availability from your stationery supplier before choosing this model.
Essae PR-95 — High-Endurance Compact
- Print speed: 220 mm/sec
- Paper width: 79.5mm
- Interfaces: USB + Serial + Ethernet
- Auto-cutter: Full + Partial cut, 1.5 million cut life
- Printer head life: 150 km
- Driver support: Windows 7 + Windows 10
Best for: Shops that want durability in a compact footprint. The PR-95 combines the reliability of the PR-75 (150km head life) with standard 79.5mm paper — ideal when you want a long-lasting printer without switching to wider rolls. Windows 7 support is useful if your POS terminal runs older software.
